When the customer pays with his card in a currency different than euros, Visa automatically converts the transaction amount into euros.
When is the exchange rate determined?
The exchange rate is determined when the amount is debited on the customer's account.
For an online payment, 3D Secure is only used to authenticate the payment. It does not necessarily trigger its immediate processing. The applicable exchange rate will therefore be calculated when the merchant submits the transaction for payment.
For an in-store payment, authorization is generally immediate. The rate used is therefore often very close to the rate available at the time of purchase, even if the transaction is debited later.
As exchange rates fluctuate, the final amount in euros may differ slightly from an estimation made when the payment was approved.
Does Sumeria charge any fees?
Sumeria does not charge any additional fees for payments made in foreign currencies.
Estimate the amount in euros
The customer can use Visa’s official currency converter to obtain an estimate:
- Open Visa’s official currency converter.
- Enter the transaction amount and currency.
- Select the euro as your card currency.
- Enter 0% in the bank fee field.
The result is provided for guidance only and cannot be considered as a definitive amount guaranteed by Lydia Solutions. The final amount may differ from this estimation due to the evolution of the exchange rate of the converter, the moment of the purchase or the time of your purchase and the day the transaction is actually processed by Visa.
Important information
When a merchant or ATM gives you the choice of paying in euros or in the local currency, choose the local currency. If you choose euros, the merchant or ATM operator may apply its own exchange rate and additional service fees.
